As an occupational therapist, I am cognizant of the materials I pick when working with a client. Especially if a child has decreased visual attention or a visual impairment. So when I do a coloring task I make sure the paper does not blend in the table such as white on white. I choose a brightly colored paper to create a contrast. Table mats are a great place to add a pop of color to increase a child’s visual attention to a meal and the food on their plate. If providing a color pop is not enough then I employ sounds or movement to where I want a child to look. Like hitting a marker on the table to provide a sound, shaking the paper for visual input, or having the child visually scan back and forth food on the fork while making  noises. Get creative and add a pop of color and some of these strategies to your daily life.
