Sequencing is an important skill for kids to perform all multi-step activities from writing letters in the correct formation to putting on clothes with correct orientation. Sequencing is a part of executive functioning. The term executive functioning refers to our abilities to problem solve, monitor, plan, and direct future behaviors. Occupational therapists utilize a lot of strategies to target sequencing. Below is an example of how to help a child with sequencing using a craft:

  • Crafts:
    • Providing a model helps children plan how they are going to use materials appropriately. Have the child talk out how they are going to execute the craft before starting to be successful.
    • For children who have difficulty sequencing from a model: provide a list of simple instructions.
    • Grade the activity down to a small amount of steps by pre-cutting out shapes or perform all the steps in front of child and having them perform the last step.
